It seems that the new boss at Yahoo, Carol Bartz has started exerting her influence on the struggling company. They have relaunched their search pages, supported by a massive $100m global advertising campaign.
A big part of the redesign means Yahoo will open its home page to rivals, allowing users to integrate third-party web services like Facebook or Hotmail into its portal. The new “customisable applications” allow people to see a snapshot of their favourite web services within the Yahoo portal – whether it is a social networking site, a rival web mail service, or their favourite website.
“The new home page is a powerful way to get a view into your life on the internet.” said Rich Riley, Yahoo’s senior vice-president for Europe.
“We expect more traffic, the number of unique users to go up… an increase in audience engagement and more repeat visits.” he continued.
We’ll see I suppose but to me it looks a little bit like what Google did with their front page over a year ago and Yahoo are once again playing catch-up.
Yahoo currently have 8.4% market share in the UK, recently losing ground to Microsoft’s Bing. Google, of course, still lead the way.
I’m still optimising our clients’ sites for Google. If a site is ranking well on Google, it usually (but not always) ranks well on the other “big three”.
